Writing

At Henham we have designed a bespoke writing curriculum that reflects our learning community. We follow a Talk4Writing approach, with highly modelled lessons and rich texts that support learning and quality writing.

What is Writing?

Writing is a means of expression and a communication tool. Developing language and composing thoughts and ideas in a written form and being able to adapt writing to suit an audience or a particular purpose.

What does it look like at Henham?

At Henham, we aim for all our children to be able to write independently in a variety of genres and for a range of purposes with fluency, accuracy, and enjoyment.  We believe children should understand from an early age that their writing needs to be accurate, legible, and set out in an appropriate way.   It is our hope for them that they will learn to enjoy writing, see the value of it and for them to leave us as confident, accomplished writers.

Progression of skills

At Henham and Ugley Primary School, our learning is progressive, which we demonstrate through the progression map below.

Assessment in Writing.

Following our assessment cycle, a writing activity will be assessed by the class teacher at three points in the year. This will be assessed against the teacher assessment framework for each year group
