Spelling
What is spelling?
Spelling helps children develop their understanding of spelling principles and rules, and to become confident spellers. Spelling is a key part of literacy, as it helps children recognise words and communicate effectively.
What does it look like at Henham?
Spelling is taught throughout the school on a daily basis. Starting in EYFS following the Jolly Phonics programme moving onto the Henham spelling progression scheme. A variety of teaching strategies being used to expose our pupils to creative ways to learn spelling rules and patterns. Spelling practise forms part of our weekly homework using the learning platform spelling frame.
Assessment of spelling.
Teachers use our learning platform ‘spelling frame’ to assess learning, together with regular tests, monitoring of children’s writing and assessments at points throughout the year. In EYFS weekly phonic checks are carried out to assess understanding.
